Get Real Detroit spoke with ‘8 Mile’ director Curtis Hanson and asked him when the film became a Detroit movie. “The first script said Detroit, but it could have been anywhere,” Hanson said. “And the assumption was that it might be anywhere, and when I came here to get to know Marshall, I got to know the city better. I knew it a little bit already, but I spent time really getting to know it and getting to know the truth of where he came from. What I concluded was that the story had to take place in the past. Originally it was in the present, but the truth of this story really was in the past. It’s not many years in the past, but in terms of pop culture and hip-hop, six years is a long time.”
