Rap’s Deterioration From Expression To Ego

I know that by now most of us are sick of the topic of battles, but after the 'How Far Is This Gonna Go' article I just wanted to say something about "rap wars" in general. People all have their opinions on Ja Rule and 50 Cent obviously, as well as on all the other battling rappers of the past and present. But I just don't understand the support given to these ridiculous things and the public reaction to it, like everyone is just sitting there waiting for the next problem to start up, so that they will have something to talk about. Obviously when you are a fan of any type of music, and any musician in general you get attached, and want to defend them or at least don't want to see anything happen to them. But I for one think that these battles are completely destroying the rap industry. (more...)

Eminem Takes Home Best Rap Album Grammy

Eminem took home best rap album at the Grammy Awards on Sunday. He said upon accepting the honor, "Yo, man. Instead of me coming out here and thanking the people that I usually thank and whatever, because all those people who had something to do with my album know who they are, I made me a little list of emcees that I wanted to name off that inspired me to bring me where I am today, you know. Because honestly, I wouldn't be here without them. So the list goes like this, and it's not in this order, but the list is this: Run-DMC, the Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, Kool G Rap, Master Ace, Big Daddy Cane, Dr. Dre, everyone in N.W.A., Tupac, Jay-Z. Thank you because I learned from all of you. Thank you."

Nelly Will Always Support Rap Veterans

Launch.com spoke with Nelly at the Billboard Music Awards and said that there are certain artists that he is still a fan of and whom he will always support whenever they put out new music. "Definitely Run-DMC, LL Cool J, I don't know... Amazingly, 2Pac keeps coming out with another album and I will be there at the store every time," Nelly said. "You know, I heard Biggie's coming out with another album and I think I would definitely be at the store every time. I think Scarface is another one of those guys. I think an N.W.A. album--any time N.W.A. puts out an album. OutKast is another person that I think no matter what they do, I'll be in line to support it."

Ice Cube Now Leads By Example

Ice Cube tells Rebecca Louie of the New York Daily News that back in the days of N.W.A., he "didn't understand why rich people was rich and poor people was poor." Cube says, "You think you can change the world with a statement ... but I've learned that's not how it goes. Now, instead of saying something as an example of how to be, I just become the example."

Ice Cube Loves To Have Control Of Music & Movies

Ice Cube spoke with Time magazine about his filmmaking career and his departure from N.W.A. in 1990 in a financial dispute. "The music business toughens your business sense," Cube says. "Hollywood is a piece of cake compared to the record business." And as in music, Cube wants to be involved in every aspect of movie making. "I oversee every aspect of filmmaking," he notes. "I put my two cents into decisions on the artwork, the actors, the wardrobe, the locations." Read more.
