Rap acts on television this week include Outkast, who performs on ‘The Tonight Show with Jay Leno’ on Wednesday and ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ on Thursday; The Black Eyed Peas, who perform on ‘Today’ on Friday; Xzibit, who visits ‘Late Night with Conan O’Brien’ on Friday; and the Roots, who perform on ‘Last Call with Carson Daly’ on Friday.
‘The Early Show’ co-anchor Harry Smith chatted with Big Boi and Andre 3000 of Outkast on Friday (August 25), about the genesis of their new movie ‘Idlewild’. “Myself, Big Boi and Brian Barber, the writer and director of the film, we’ve been trying to make movies since our third album, ‘Aquemini,’ and it just never came about,” said Benjamin. “Then after the album ‘Speakerboxxx/The Love Below,’ we had these two video treatments that were the basis of what the movie is right now and Brian Barber took that and turned it into a great script and movie.”
HitsDailyDouble.com reports Danity Kane and Outkast are neck and neck in 1-day album sales, with the ‘Making of the Band’ girl group’s self-titled debut and ‘Idlewild’ each poised to sell 200,000 in their opening weeks. If Christina Aguilera doesn’t drop too much after her 342k opening week of ‘Back To Basics’, she also may retain the pole position. Meanwhile, Paris Hilton’s debut ‘Paris’ is set to sell around 90,000 copies which should be good enough for #5.
Rappers on television this week include Outkast, who perform on ‘The Late Show with David Letterman’ on Monday, visit ‘TRL’ on Tuesday and ‘The Early Show’ on Friday, while Andre 3000 visits ‘The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson’ on Friday; E-40, who performs with T-Pain on ‘The Late Late Show’ on Monday and gets a 1st look on ‘TRL’ on Thursday; and Busta Rhymes, who performs on ‘The Late Show’ on Wednesday.
Andre 3000 phoned in to MTV News on Tuesday (August 8) to repeat that Outkast are not breaking up. “Yesterday I got a phone call from Big Boi and he said that on some hip-hop Web sites that the headlines were reading something to the effect of, ‘It’s Official: Outkast Is Broken Up,’ or something like that,” Andre said. “And man, we’re looking at it like, where is this sh** coming from? I was on ‘TRL’ today to release a new video, and I meant to say something [about the situation] on the air. But the way they had the questions set up, I didn’t have a chance to do it.” Read more.
The Sun’s Something For The Week caught up with Outkast’s Andre 3000 and Big Boi for a Q&A, where the duo were asked about the rumor they don’t get along and prefer to record separately. “We’ve been hearing it since ‘Stankonia’,” Big Boi responded. “A lot of people just get the outside appearance mixed up. Some might take Andre not going on the road as a sign but those are our preferences. No friction, no beef. We just go through the same things any regular relationship goes through. We’ve known each other a long time so friendship-wise it’s all a bunch of nonsense people sensationalising a story. It doesn’t really upset me but you do feel like slapping the sh** out of these people who say it. It’s just not true.” Read more.
