Atlantans In The R&B And Rap Community Struggle With Aaliyah Tragedy

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution talked to several in the R&B and rap community for comments on the tragic death of Aaliyah on Saturday as her plane crashed shortly after takeoff in the Bahamas.

Monica said, “I don’t even know what to make of this right now. Her brother and her were close, like me and my brother. And when I think of what her mother must be going through — it scares me.”

Monica brushed off talk the two were rivals saying, “Some people might think we were rivals since we started around the same time, but we were close. I’ve known her since I was 12, when she came up and told me my accent was funny. I am really feeling this.”

revealed he told a huge crowd at the end of his concert Saturday the tragic news, “And like 40,000 people went silent. It was crazy.” added, “All I keep thinking about is I just saw her a week ago, and I’ll never, ever see her again.”
