Talib Kweli & Mos Def Perform At Benefit Awards

The Nkiru Center for Education and Culture, Inc., founded by hip-hop artists Talib Kweli and Mos Def to promote literacy and use the arts, education, history, and science to promote culture, will host its inaugural benefit awards reception Monday, December 17 at the Brooklyn Museum of Art. Tickets for the event are $50 and can be RSVP’d.

NAACP Image Awards Nominees Announced

DMX, Outkast, Ja Rule, and Sean ‘P Diddy’ Combs are amongst the nominees for this year’s 33rd Annual NAACP Image Awards which will take place at Universal Amphitheatre on February 23, 2002. The show will broadcast later in early March on FOX.

Lil’ Romeo Gets Rap Artist Of The Year Nod

Rapper Lil’ Romeo picked up the Rap Artist of the Year at the Billboard Music Awards on Tuesday night in Las Vegas. In accepting the award, the 11 year old star said, “Well, first of all I just want to thank God because if you believe in him you can accomplish anything you want. So — and I want to thank my beautiful mom right here. I love you. Brothers, my little sisters, my cousins, my uncle Hot B, my uncle Silk, uncle C., Everybody, my body guards, Big G., Kevin, everybody aight — out there especially my fans because I couldn’t do it without you and I love y’all. And for the man who made this all possible for me, my homey, friend, teammate, my dad, Master P. Peace. We love y’all.”

DMX Misses Billboard Awards.. Surprised?

Well DMX again missed a scheduled awards show appearance as Mary J. Blige explained at the Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas on Tuesday night about his special Billboard award for record-breaking achievement this year, “The first one goes to D.M.X. He is the only artist in history to have his first four albums all debut number one on the Billboard 200. He missed his plane, unfortunately. I wish he was here. But D.M.X., If you can hear me, yo, we did it again!” The other award went to *NSYNC.

Coolio Won The Fear Factor Celebrity Show

Earlier this week, rapper Coolio beat out Chyna, David Hasselhoff, Brook Burns, Donnie Osmond and John Travolta’s wife Kelly Preston to take home the $50,000 prize that went to his favorite charity, inner city kids. In order to get the cash, Coolio had to pull flags while riding on the roof of a fast moving bus. He had to stick his head in a box for 3 minutes that was filled with scorpions, millipedes and worms, and run on circular plank that was suspended 100 feet in the air.

Ja Rule & Jay-Z Nab Vibe Awards

Vibe Magazine’s Artist of the Year award this year went to Ja Rule and Jay-Z’s ‘The Blueprint’ was named as Album of the Year. The magazine is out this week. Sean Puffy Combs and Outkast were also winners in the awards.

Eminem Scores MTV Europe Award

Eminem grabbed the Best Hip Hop Act award at the 2001 MTV Europe Awards in Frankfurt on Thursday but wasn’t able to pick it up in person. Slim told the crowd by taped message, “I’m sorry I couldn’t be there, I’m on the set of my new movie right now, so I’m kinda busy doing that and I’m in the studio. So I’m juggling both things right now, so thank you for this award and hopefully I’ll be back next year.”

Puffy’s Style Honored

Sean P. Diddy Combs won the ‘Sharp Dressed Man’ award at the Vogue/VH1 Fashion Awards as the VH1.com website proclaimed, “P. Diddy knows how to step out in style. From his famous annual “white party,” at which guests must dress in the thematic color, to the ghetto fabulous duds he creates for the Sean John line, Puffy knows that bad boys can still look good.”
