Dizzee Rascal became the first rapper to win the Mercury Music Prize on Tuesday night. The 19-year-old from the inner city was a shock choice at the ceremony in London. Dizzee hopes his victory will lead to the sort of sales that will take him from his East London roots to better things. “I’ve always loved music and I am proud of where I come from,” Dizzee said. “I work hard and try to do the best so I can get where I want. I don’t promote violence but I’m not anti violence. I’m not a gangster or a mass murderer. I just say what any normal person would say, which is that if you mess with me you’ll get something back.” Read more.
