Mos Def performed at Metro on Sunday night, just after the Cubs won their playoff game, and Matthew Lurie of the Chicago Tribune was on hand. Lurie writes, “Sunday’s sold-out show, packed with an extraordinarily diverse crowd, was an urgent test to see if urban bohemia’s No. 1 MC still has something to bring to the table. Alternately meandering and brilliant, Mos Def’s performance was far beyond a mere collection of rhymes and beats; the audience was given a stream-of-consciousness love-fest of black music, interpolating everything from R. Kelly to Gregory Issacs, even as he neatly sidestepped questions about any significant amount of new material.”
