Simmons Explains Planned Hip Hop Protest
The New York Daily News spoke with Island/Def Jam record and Phat Farm clothing mogul Russell Simmons on the upcoming hip hop backed protest of New York City’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s proposed school cuts of at least $205 million. Simmons explained it was Sex in the City star Cynthia Nixon who urged the hip hop community’s involvement after her recent arrest from an earlier protest. Simmons said, “The more I learned, the more disturbed I got. The kids don’t have desks, they don’t have books. The music programs are gone. The teachers are underpaid.”
