Lupe Fiasco spoke with Australia’s Time Off magazine on why he thinks it took so long for his career to kick off. “I think it was timing,” he explained. “The music industry is pretty saturated, [with party hip-hop] kinda reaching its peak, so people were waiting for something a little bit different to what was going on – as far as approach and style and even image – just a different person to come out with a different story, because you’ve heard the gangsta story and then you’ve heard the opposite of it which is, ‘I’m just this conscientious dude and I wanna build schools…’. There was something missing from the middle. If you look at Kanye, who represents the center, it’s more flashy, it’s more braggadocio – his persona is a little bit more harsh. So I guess I became the light-hearted hero who struck at the right time – something that people were waiting on.”
Popworld.com caught up with Lupe Fiasco in a Q&A and asked the rapper to name a bad habit he can’t seem to break. “I’m slightly germophobic, slightly obsessive and compulsive,” he admitted. “There was this situation that happened the day before yesterday in Birmingham. We’d just done the Jay-Z show and I went to the bathroom. It was a push door but the door that actually lets you outside was a pull door and I didn’t have any napkins to, like, grab the handle with. The push door had already shut so I couldn’t get back because I didn’t have any napkins to open that. I had to wait. I actually found something in my pocket, like a piece of paper, it was a plane ticket receipt. I have little, stupid moments like that, but I’m breaking away from them.”
Lupe Fiasco’s upcoming debut, ‘Food and Liquor’, will be different from most hip-hop debuts, light on guest appearances. “The only people that are talking on the album are Jill Scott and Jay-Z,” the rapper told AOL Music. “Everybody I work with, either I respect their music or I respect them as a person. And I respect Jill Scott as a person, past her music.”
