Slum Village’s J Dilla Dead At 32

Billboard reports that J Dilla, a founding member of Slum Village, died Friday (February 10) in Los Angeles. The Detroit-hailing rapper/producer succumbed to complications from lupus. He was 32.

Detroit Hip-Hop Battleground Reopens Doors reports that The Hiphop Shop, the clothing store and rap battleground that spawned the careers of Eminem, Proof and Slum Village, is being resurrected. But the reopening, by Detroit entrepreneur Kevin “Hustle Simmons” Brown, has triggered a battle itself, as Brown does not have the blessing of the Shop’s original owners.

Slum Village Regroups As A Duo

Billboard reports Slum Village has set a June 29th release date for its new album, ‘Detroit Deli (A Taste of Detroit).’ The Capitol set finds Slum Village working as a duo of T3 and Elzhi, following the departure of principal member Baatin. The set’s first single, ‘Selfish’, features producer-of-the-moment Kanye West. It’s No. 69 in its second week on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart.

Dwele, Slum Village Hit The Road

Dwele and Slum Village will kick off a two-week tour tomorrow (January 7) in New York. The Roots DJ Scratch is in the opening slot, following his own band’s recently completed Okayplayer Winter Break Tour.

Troubles With Slum Village’s Baatin

MuchMusic found out last night there is one more major change with Slum Village’s lineup that T3 let out of the bag. “Baatin is dealing with some issues right now,” explained T3 of the MC’s absence from the interview. “He couldn’t come out. ” Baatin instead opted to say home in the States leaving T3 as the only original member still with the group. “You all won’t see a lot of Baatin but he is on the album, Jay Dee is on the new album too. I just hope Baatin can work out his issues and we get back together but you’re looking at the Slum Village right now.”

Backstage With Slum Village

Also on tap for this weekend’s Soul Train are Slum Village. T3 and Elzhi chatted with during the taping last month. Asked about their latest effort ‘Trinity’, T3 said, “This album is a collective album. We got a lot of different sounds on it, you know, it’s past, present and future, Soul, Alternative, Funk and Jazz kinda mixed together, so we kinda brought all those worlds together.”

Spend A Day With Slum Village hung out with Slum Village in Hollywood recently. They talked about their style, how each member reflects either the group’s past, present, or future, what they’ve been up to since their album dropped in August, they stopped by the Reebok store, and then went into the studio. The site has since shut down.
